• The Ostwald viscometer is a viscometer used for comparative measurements. Use a pipette or similar device to place a liquid sample in the range of 5~8 mL (always constant volume) in the lower spherical part shown in the figure on the right. Dip the viscometer above the mark A in a constant temperature water bath for the viscometer. The liquid sample is sucked up above mark A and then allowed to flow down naturally, measuring the time it takes for a volume of liquid sample from mark A to B to flow down the capillary. Use the same method to measure a standard solution with a known viscosity, taking care that the volume of the liquid in the lower sphere is the same. It ranges from No. 1 to No. 6 depending on the capillary diameter. Relative viscometer for comparative measurements. The volume of the ball is about 3 mL.
