- It can be used as a reference source for beam samplers and interferometers.
- It can also be used as a prism that refracts at a small angle.
- The beam declination angle δ can be determined from the refractive index n and the wedge angle α.
- δ = sin−1 (n sinα) − α ≒ (n −1) α
- 0.52 times the wedge angle for BK7 and 0.46 times for synthetic quartz.
