• This device uses low-boiling solvents such as ether that are entrainable with oils to extract trace amounts of active ingredients from natural products by low-temperature evaporation.
• It can efficiently extract heat-labile substances.

• After making sure that the cock at the bottom of the upper left drop tank is closed, prepare the sample solution in the drop tank, heat the lower left heating flask with hot water at about 30°C from the outside, heat the device with circulating water at about 30°C, cool the lower right receiving flask with liquid nitrogen from the outside, and cool the trap on the receiving flask with liquid nitrogen.
• The sample is usually an ether extract, but you can also use methylene chloride.
• Use a vacuum pump to reduce pressure inside the device from the nozzle of the trap on the receiver.
• A liquid nitrogen cooling trap is placed in front of the vacuum pump just in case.
• Under reduced pressure, gradually open the needle cock at the bottom of the drop tank and perform flash distillation.
• Solvents and light components are collected in the receiving flask.
• Heavy ingredients remain in the heating flask.
• Because of the latent heat of evaporation, frost will stick to the outside of the needle cock, so it is sometimes necessary to warm it from the outside using a hair dryer.
• After distillation, if necessary, the liquid nitrogen in the trap on the receiver can be removed, and the flask can be heated to collect the solvent in the trap, leaving only light components in the receiver.
