8/16 bit AVR XMEGA microcontroller
The Atmel AVR XMEGA microcontroller delivers the best combination of MCU real-time performance, advanced integration and low power consumption for 8/16 bit applications. The Atmel AVR XMEGA device uses an advanced analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that provides both high speed and high resolution. These ADCs provide up to four translation channels with different result registers, and the setup and configuration process for each channel can be set up separately. This makes it very easy to use because multiple software modules can access the ADC individually.
The event system facilitates 100% predictable, short response time signal transmission between peripherals. This ensures real-time control and reduces CPU load by removing one interrupt on the context switch each time an event is used. Most peripherals and DMA controllers are connected to the event system. The AVR XMEGA E-Series instead features an asynchronous peripheral event system.
The AVR XMEGA4 channel direct memory access (DMA) controller provides high-speed, CPU-independent data transfer for any combination of data memory and peripherals. AVR XMEGA devices use Atmel AVR CPUs. The instruction set and CPU design are tailored to minimize code size and maximize execution speed. Single-cycle execution of arithmetic and logic operations provides nearly 1 MIPS per MHz of AVR XMEGA microcontroller performance. The fast access register file, which has a 32 x 8 bit generic work register, is directly connected to the arithmetic logic unit (ALU). During one clock cycle, the ALU can be fed to two arbitrary registers to perform the requested operation and write the result. Effectively supports 8/16/32 bit operations.
